In a partnership nobody saw coming, AfriForum and the anti-immigration movement March and March have formed a collaborative working group agreeing to jointly pursue legal matters, community safety, education, and illegal immigration issues. It follows March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma’s statement that she wants to build “an AfriForum for black South Africans,” and the launch of her new SA First Forum legal advocacy body, which AfriForum has agreed to mentor.
Meanwhile, Cat Matlala is back in the hot seat at the Madlanga Commission, and the web keeps growing. New testimony has placed former Ekurhuleni mayor Tania Campbell, suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, and ex-minister Bheki Cele all somewhere in Matlala’s orbit alongside the late taxi boss Jothan “Mswazi” Msibi. The commission also heard how a police sergeant allegedly used SAPS letterhead to help source covert phone “grabber” technology from a Czech supplier, intended for resale in eSwatini.
Finally, we revisit a decade-old wound that’s still bleeding: former ABI (Coca-Cola) owner-drivers say the company’s flagship BEE empowerment scheme left them financially ruined instead of empowered. It’s the story behind Daily Maverick’s award-winning “Casualties of Cola” investigation and a R6.3 billion lawsuit that’s still unresolved.
Three very different stories, one theme: who South Africa’s institutions actually serve.
