Naledi Pandor has taken aim at AfriForum and the development of Afrikaans institutions such as Akademia—but what does her criticism reveal about the ANC’s broader ideological agenda?
In this video, I examine Pandor’s controversial remarks about Afrikaners, Afrikaans education, “conservative liberalism” and South Africa’s supposed transition towards a “fundamentally different” progressive democracy. I also explore the ANC’s National Democratic Revolution, the role of Pan-Africanism and why independently funded institutions may represent a threat to the party’s political project.
We look at the gradual decline of Afrikaans instruction at South African schools and universities, the implications of the BELA Act, Jonathan Jansen’s criticism of Akademia and the argument that Afrikaans institutions amount to racial exclusion. Akademia, however, is a privately funded, Afrikaans-medium university that admits students regardless of race.
Is this genuinely a debate about inclusion—or is it an ideological struggle over who controls education, language and cultural identity in South Africa?
