Zimbabwe has officially extended President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term until 2030 after signing controversial constitutional amendments into law. The move delays the country’s next election and has raised serious questions about democracy, constitutional limits, and the concentration of political power.
Could South Africa ever face something similar?
In this episode of Newsflash, Joe Emilio breaks down what happened in Zimbabwe, why constitutional changes deserve closer scrutiny, and why South Africa’s strong civil society remains one of the country’s greatest safeguards against government overreach.
The second story focuses on South Africa’s proposed amendments to the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act, commonly known as the PIE Act.
The government says the changes will crack down on organised land invasions by introducing penalties of up to R2 million and prison sentences for those who orchestrate illegal occupations.
But is that really enough?
While the proposed amendments introduce harsher criminal penalties, property owners would still need to approach the courts before removing unlawful occupiers. The legal process remains lengthy, expensive, and uncertain for many South Africans.
This episode examines whether the amendments truly protect property rights or whether they leave the biggest loophole untouched.
Topics covered include:
• Zimbabwe constitutional amendments
• Emmerson Mnangagwa
• Zimbabwe elections
• ANC and Zimbabwe relations
• Democracy in Southern Africa
