Julius Malema is at war with podcasters again this time targeting MacG’s Podcast and Chill, accusing it of “depoliticising” South African youth. The timing raises questions: this is a man named in Madlanga Commission evidence tied to a Crime Intelligence general shot before he could testify, while former allies at IDAC resign and admit things under oath. Yet his public anger is aimed squarely at independent media covering the commission.
Then, ANC-branded bread is back in the headlines properly branded loaves handed out in communities as the November local government elections approach. DA Johannesburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille didn’t hold back, posting that “vote-buying is a key component of ANC culture,” amid a separate, explosive public row between Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Fikile Mbalula over alleged conference vote-buying.
Finally, some good news out of Johannesburg: 26-year-old Alex Soleil Van Heerden was forcibly abducted outside her Northcliff home on Wednesday evening by at least three men. Her Uber driver raised the alarm immediately, Specialised Security Services coordinated an urgent public appeal, and by Thursday night, community tips helped locate her safe in Vosloorus. Suspects have been arrested.
Three stories accountability, integrity, and community all playing out in the same 24 hours in South Africa.
