Allegations of vote buying inside the ANC have once again placed South African politics under the spotlight after former ANC presidential contender Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma made explosive claims involving ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula and the party’s 2022 National Conference at Nasrec.
According to the allegations, money was allegedly distributed during the ANC elective conference to influence support for leadership positions, including the election of the ANC Secretary General and President Cyril Ramaphosa. These allegations have reignited debate about corruption, political accountability and the integrity of internal party elections.
In this episode, we unpack what was said, why these claims are resurfacing years later, and what they could mean for South African politics if further evidence ever emerges. It is important to note that these remain allegations, and no court has made findings confirming the claims discussed.
We also look at another major development affecting millions of South Africans.
The South African government has announced that driver’s licence renewals for private motorists will move from every five years to every ten years. The change applies to most light motor vehicles and motorcycles and is expected to reduce pressure on the country’s licence renewal system.
Civil society organisations, including AfriForum and OUTA, have campaigned for years to have the renewal period extended. Their argument has been that South Africa’s current renewal system places unnecessary pressure on motorists while government continues to struggle with ageing infrastructure.
However, one major concern remains.
South Africa still relies on a single driver’s licence card printing machine, which has become notorious for repeated breakdowns and lengthy backlogs. Critics argue that extending licence validity helps reduce immediate pressure but does not solve the underlying administrative problems unless the Department of Transport modernises the entire licensing system.
In this episode we discuss:
* The latest allegations involving Fikile Mbalula.
* What Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma claimed happened at the ANC’s 2022 conference.
* Why these allegations are resurfacing now.
* The new 10 year driver’s licence renewal period.
* Which licence categories are affected.
* Why commercial and professional licences are different.
* Concerns surrounding South Africa’s ageing licence printing infrastructure.
* The role civil society organisations have played in pushing for reform.
These stories highlight two very different issues currently making headlines in South Africa. One centres on political accountability and allegations involving senior ANC leadership. The other represents a practical change that will affect millions of South African motorists for years to come.
As always, the goal is to examine the facts, explore the available information, and encourage informed discussion on issues affecting South Africans.
