A photograph of the new Financial Mail and Currency News editorial team has triggered a major controversy about newsroom diversity, racial transformation and the future of South African journalism.
The South African National Editors’ Forum, commonly known as SANEF, described the overwhelmingly white senior team shown in the promotional image as evidence of a serious systemic failure. SANEF argued that the photograph demonstrated the exclusion of Black journalists from influential editorial positions and called for greater representation across recruitment, commissioning, mentorship and newsroom leadership.
Currency News editor Rob Rose acknowledged that the combined newsroom was not yet diverse enough. He committed the publication to increasing the representation and advancement of Black journalists and editors. But the controversy raises a deeper question about equality, individual merit and the standards being applied to different racial groups in South Africa.
Would an entirely Black newsroom receive the same condemnation for employing too few white journalists?
This Newsflash episode examines that uncomfortable double standard and asks whether journalists are now being judged by their reporting or by their appearance. If condemning an all-Black editorial team would be considered racist, why is sweeping condemnation of a predominantly white team treated as progressive?
There is no evidence in the articles discussed that Financial Mail or Currency News journalists produced racially discriminatory reporting. No specific investigation, article or editorial decision was identified as proof that Black South African voices had been deliberately suppressed. The central evidence was a photograph showing the racial composition of the senior team.
That distinction matters.
Newsrooms should be challenged when they publish inaccurate information, ignore important communities, exclude relevant sources or present ideological opinion as objective reporting. Those are meaningful tests of journalistic quality. A photograph alone cannot reveal the integrity, competence or worldview of every person pictured.
The episode also explores the response published by The Common Sense, which defended the new Financial Mail and Currency News operation. Its editorial argued that race does not determine a journalist’s ability to understand economics, finance or markets. It maintained that the team should be evaluated according to the accuracy, insight and intellectual rigour of its journalism.
South Africa needs serious debate about media transformation, newsroom diversity and equal opportunity. It also needs consistent principles. A standard that changes according to the race of the people involved is not equality.
Rather than deciding what journalists believe by looking at their skin colour, audiences can examine the work itself. Are the facts correct? Are different viewpoints considered? Are important economic stories being investigated? Are readers receiving useful, independent journalism?
This episode challenges SANEF’s intervention, examines allegations of racial hypocrisy and considers whether anti-racism is being used to justify a new form of racial classification. It is a direct discussion about Financial Mail, Currency News, SANEF, South African media transformation, newsroom representation, freedom of association, journalistic merit and racial double standards.
The principle is simple: journalists should be judged by their conduct and the quality of their work, not presumed guilty or legitimate because of their skin colour.
