South Africa’s BELA Act could give the state far greater control over schools, governing bodies, teacher development and additional teacher compensation—but is this merely about education reform, or does it form part of the ANC’s broader National Democratic Revolution?
In this video, I examine the latest draft regulations linked to the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act and the concerns raised by education researcher Johnell Prinsloo of the Solidarity Research Institute. These include additional administrative burdens for school governing bodies, increased provincial oversight, possible centralisation of teacher training and tighter control over compensation for extracurricular responsibilities.
But the deeper question is how the BELA Act connects to the ANC’s National Democratic Revolution. By examining the ANC’s own ideological documents, we explore its vision of a developmental state, a unified national identity and the relationship between the liberation movement, the state and the “will of the people.”
Could increased state control threaten Afrikaans schools, cultural institutions and community-led education? And do the political attacks on Afrikaans education, Akademia, AfriForum and Orania reveal a broader ideological objective?
