South Africa continues to face difficult questions about crime, corruption and public trust. In today’s News Flash, we examine new research on farm attacks and farm murders, along with a viral video that appears to show a woman exposing alleged corruption at a Department of Home Affairs office.
The first story looks at research highlighting the relative lethality of farm attacks compared with other residential and business robberies. According to the analysis discussed in this episode, attacks on farming households are significantly more likely to end in murder than comparable attacks elsewhere in South Africa. We unpack what those figures mean, why they matter, and why many people believe farm attacks deserve recognition as a priority crime.
The discussion also explores the wider debate surrounding farm murders in South Africa. While violent crime affects communities across the country, the statistics examined in this episode raise important questions about whether attacks on farms present unique characteristics that require targeted policing and policy responses.
The second story focuses on a viral Home Affairs video in which a woman publicly alleges that she was approached to pay R150 to receive faster service. The footage has sparked widespread discussion online about alleged corruption, queue jumping and bribery inside government departments. Although the allegations remain just that unless formally investigated, the video has reignited debate about accountability and public confidence in state institutions.
This episode explores the broader issues raised by both stories, including violent crime, policing, corruption, government services and the importance of credible data when discussing issues that affect South Africans every day.
Topics covered include:
