The English football season gets underway this weekend and so does the local Betway Premiership. What should you be watching? Ryan Reynolds will be watching his Wrexham side make their English Championship debut.
South African Betway Premiership
Orlando Pirates are the most legitimate challengers to Mamelodi Sundowns’ throne. Sundowns have won each of the last seven league crowns with the financial backing of Patrice Motsepe and it would be a brave man betting against them making it eight on the bounce. Where should you be focusing your attention?
- Chippa vs Sundowns (Sat, 9 August, 15:00)
- Orlando Pirates vs Sekhukhune (Sat, 9 August, 17:30
- Stellenbosch vs Kaizer Chiefs (Sun, 10 August, 17:30)

English Chamionship
Football fanatics will have to wait another week for the return of the English Premier League, but the second tier is back and usually delivers entertainment and betting value. Ipswich Town are many pundits’ favourites to bounce right back to the top tier by winning this season’s English Championship, and they have an opening clash away to Birmingham on Friday, 08 August at 21:00.
Birmingham stormed to the League 1 title last term and have a great home record, so this is a tricky tie for Ipswich as they get a title charge underway.
Pick: Birmingham 1-1 Ipswich
Ryan Reynolds in the house
Wrecham’s ascent up the divisions continues as they now occupy a place in the second tier. Their opening clash in this exalted company is away to Southampton. Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has added more firepower to his squad with Kieffer Moore, Lewis O’Brien, Josh Windass and Ryan Hardie to the squad this summer but they remain leaky at the back. Southampton vs the Ryan Reynolds-owned Wrexham kicks off on Saturday, 9 August at 13:30.
Pick: Over 2.5 goals
Community Shield
The match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace kicks off on Sunday, 10 August at 16:00 from Wembley. Four of Palace’s last five matches have featured under 2.5 goals so it should be another cagey affair.
Pick: Under 2.5 goals
