South Africans are being squeezed by rising rates, weak growth and falling living standards. Dawie Roodt explains why the Reserve Bank raised interest rates and what it means for the economy.
Roodt challenges the usual explanation for inflation, examines the impact of external price pressures, and explains why higher interest rates still affect South Africans even when inflation comes from outside the country.
He also breaks down South Africa’s weak economic growth, the risk of a technical recession, declining per-capita output and what continued low growth means for living standards.
The conversation then moves to a bigger question: who should control money? Roodt explores how stablecoins and new forms of money could change transactions, savings and the ability of governments to control the movement of capital.
