Summary:
Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng has become the EFF’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate while her term as UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health reportedly runs until August. Her move into party politics, public support for Julius Malema and ongoing legal controversy have raised questions about her independence and whether she is seeking political protection, although these remain allegations.
South Africa and Nigeria have also held high-level talks after tensions over migration, crime and attacks on foreign nationals. Nigeria raised concerns about evacuations and deaths, while South Africa highlighted alleged organised crime and resistance to police operations; both countries agreed to reduce inflammatory rhetoric and rely on lawful state institutions rather than vigilantism.
