Durban’s next mayor will be either DA or MK, and whoever wins controls a R75 billion city budget. DA candidate Haniff Hoosen asks the question every eThekwini voter has to answer: would you hand that chequebook to a party that says R33 million vanished from its own bank account?
In this Vote26 interview filmed in Durban, Hoosen puts numbers on the table. Money owed to the city has risen from R17 billion to R50 billion in five years. Irregular expenditure has gone from R700 million to R4.6 billion. Water losses have climbed to 65%. He also admits on camera that the DA’s Phoenix posters were a mistake, tells the ID–DA merger story he says he has never told publicly, and sets out exactly what he would do in his first 100 days. There are no soundbites here, only the record and the stakes.
