South Africa’s municipalities are collapsing. But is political leadership really the only problem?
One local movement believes the country needs to rethink how it chooses leaders, delivers services and governs communities.
In this interview, SMM representative Befana explains why his movement believes competence should matter more than political popularity, why local communities must take responsibility for their own futures, and why South Africa’s obsession with political promises could be making things worse.
The conversation also tackles some uncomfortable questions about political accountability, citizen participation, economic development and the future of South African democracy.
Is South Africa suffering from a leadership crisis, a culture of dependency, or a political system that rewards the wrong people?
