South Africa calls itself non-aligned. Chris Wyatt argues its actions tell a very different story.
From BRICS and China to Iran, Russia and South Africa’s increasingly strained relationship with the West, Wyatt challenges the idea that Pretoria is simply remaining neutral.
He argues that military exercises, political relationships and repeated foreign-policy decisions amount to a clear geopolitical choice.
The conversation also goes deeper into conservative government: smaller government, individual liberty, free markets and the belief that citizens should control government rather than government controlling citizens.
Wyatt then turns back to South Africa, questioning its relationships with China, Iran and Russia and asking whether money, ideology and historic ANC alliances help explain the country’s direction. He argues that calling South Africa “non-aligned” becomes difficult when its government repeatedly takes positions against Western powers.
