South Africa is being strangled by a state that wants more control while failing at the basics.
From Eskom and rail to Starlink, permits and regulation, this is a direct attack on the ANC’s economic model.
The argument is simple: South Africa does not need a bigger government. It needs a smaller, more competent state that protects property rights, enforces the law, maintains functioning institutions and then gets out of the way of entrepreneurs.
This commentary takes aim at the ANC’s obsession with regulation, state monopolies, bailouts, licensing and political control of the economy. It argues that prosperity comes from competition, private investment, innovation and allowing ordinary South Africans to build businesses without spending months or years begging government for permission.
Eskom, private electricity generation, freight rail reform, AI companies and Starlink all form part of a bigger question: should government be running the economy, or simply setting fair rules and allowing South Africans to compete?
South Africa needs a strong state where it matters, but not a massive state controlling businesses, protecting monopolies and deciding who gets to succeed.
