South Africa is grappling with a severe illegal immigration crisis, a problem that YouTube commentator Sama Sambit has plainly highlighted in his Truth Report monologue. Sambit argues that the country’s borders are “wide open,” leading to real-life consequences for its citizens.
The issue, far from being a “conspiracy” or “panic,” is a stark reality impacting job opportunities, public services and overall safety. South Africa, already battling high unemployment rates, corruption, and load shedding, is now shouldering the additional burden of an unchecked influx of undocumented individuals.
People enter SA unchecked
Sambit points out that the South African border has become “just a river you have to cross to go stay somewhere else,” effectively functioning as “immigration advice” rather than control. This lack of enforcement means individuals can enter unchecked, live undocumented and act unaccountable, posing a significant threat to national stability.
The impact is felt most acutely by everyday South Africans. Unemployed citizens lose job opportunities to undocumented workers willing to accept meager wages.
Clinics are overcrowded with individuals whose existence isn’t even recognised by the system, making it difficult for local mothers to access healthcare for their children. Crime is also on the rise, with perpetrators often being undocumented individuals who are difficult for law enforcement to track.
UN cautions xenophobic escalation
The rising discontent of illegal immigration, however, urged a group of independent UN human rights experts to condemn reports of escalating violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa. [news.un.org]
They called for accountability against rising xenophobia, racism and hate speech aimed at migrants, refugees, asylum seekers – and even citizens perceived as outsiders – throughout the country.
