What would it take for the Western Cape to break away from South Africa?
But independence is not the first step. Donald Brown speaks with Grant Marais about failing municipalities, the demand for greater provincial autonomy, coalition politics and why some Western Cape residents believe they may need to take control of their own future.
Marais argues that local government is where change must begin, with competent leadership, accountability and functioning services. He also challenges the idea that the Western Cape is succeeding simply because other provinces are struggling.
The conversation explores:
– Why local government matters more than political slogans
– Whether the DA’s record in the Western Cape lives up to its reputation
– The FF Plus outlook for the upcoming local elections
– Why language and cultural differences feature in the Cape Independence debate
– Why Marais supports Cape Independence in principle
– How federalism and greater provincial powers could be stepping stones towards self-determination
– Why he believes independence requires a gradual constitutional process rather than an immediate breakaway
Is greater autonomy enough to fix the Western Cape’s problems, or will Cape Independence eventually become the preferred option?
