Ian Cameron, who is on the parliamentary committee probing KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was with MPs Nicholas Gotsell and Lisa Schickerling in Phillipi in Cape Town when the teen attackers hit.
Ian Cameron, Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson on police and chairperson of Parliament’s police committee, said it remains unclear whether the violent attack on him and two colleagues in Philippi was a targeted hit or a random crime.
The incident, which occurred Tuesday in the high-crime area of the Western Cape, left Cameron with facial stitches and dental reconstruction, while MPs Nicholas Gotsell and Lisa Schickerling sustained injuries requiring medical treatment.
The MPs were injured after men armed with bricks surrounded their vehicle, shattering windows.
Investigation to determine motive
In an exclusive interview with Truth Report, Cameron expressed uncertainty about the motive behind the attack. “I don’t know if it was orchestrated or not,” he said. “There are a lot of theories at the moment, and I’m meeting with the police this afternoon. The investigation needs to take its course,” Cameron said.
He said the attack occurred in a street where such incidents are “quite normal,” citing a similar case in November 2024 when a police officer shot a suspect in the same area. He said he had fired a shot which injured one of the suspects.
One suspect hospitalised
“One suspect is in hospital under police guard,” he said.
The incident took place as the MPs returned from an oversight visit to the Philippi SAPS Training Academy.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa said police had arrested two suspects.
“The first suspect, an 18 year old male was apprehended on Tuesday evening as he sought medical assistance at a heal facility in Lentegeur. It is believed he was shot during the attack on the three victims when one of the vehicle occupants allegedly fired a shot in response to the attack. He is currently under police guard in hospital,” Potelwa said.
He said police had worked through the night and in the early hours of Wednesday to effect the arrest of a second suspect, a 16-year-old male, in Browns Farm.
Attempted murder, hijacking charges
“Initial reports of the crime incident indicate the attack was perpetrated by three male suspects. The investigation continues with another arrest expected in due course. The suspects face attempted murder and attempted hijacking charges.”
Cape Town Safety and Security Mayco Member JP Smith said the SAPS and police and the city’s Safety and Security Investigations Unit (SSIU) had arrested the two suspects for the attack while a third person had been briefly detained.
“I have been informed that following the incident, the teams were able to arrest the first suspect who had suffered from a gunshot wound as he sought help at a nearby hospital. Following his arrest they were able to trace the driver who took the injured suspect to the hospital and the driver was subsequently detained. After it was established that he was not linked to the attack, he was released,” Smith said.
“A second suspect, a 16-year-old boy, was subsequently arrested on Wednesday morning while a third suspect is still being sought,” he said.
Cameron sits on the parliamentary ad hoc committee that is investigating allegations by KZN Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, which has drawn significant attention.
Mkhwanazi has alleged that Mchunu has ties to alleged criminal syndicates.
Scrutiny on Mchunu intensified
These allegations have intensified scrutiny on Mchunu and raised questions about systemic corruption within the SAPS, the National Prosecuting Authority and the judiciary, potentially placing committee members like Cameron in a sensitive position as they probe these high-stakes claims.
Cameron, in a post on X, described the incident as a “serious and deliberate attack” that underscores the risks of oversight work.
“Incidents like this will not deter us,” he wrote. “We remain determined to carry out our responsibility to ensure accountability and safety.”

He expressed gratitude for the swift response from SAPS, Cape Town Metro Police, Metro EMS, CPI, and ER24, as well as support from colleagues and the community.
The DA has reiterated its commitment to oversight duties despite the risks. Cameron, reflecting on his recovery, said he was able to sit down for dinner with his family on Tuesday night, adding on his X post: “Dankie Jesus!!!”
Parliament has condemned the attacks.
