Thousands of jobs could disappear — and an entire community could be devastated. Workers and political representatives are demanding answers over the planned closure of a major South African canning factory.
The factory has operated for more than 70 years and is described as the backbone of the surrounding communities. Workers argue that the closure could directly affect more than 3,000 people, with the wider impact potentially reaching tens of thousands through farms, seasonal workers, suppliers and families.
The controversy becomes even more serious because the company had recently entered into a merger process, with speakers questioning how the closure fits with the commitments made during that process. They are calling on the Competition Commission, government and private-sector interests to investigate the situation and explore alternatives that could save jobs and keep the factory operating.
Workers also raise concerns about executive bonuses, consultation, retrenchment procedures and whether enough alternatives have been considered before closure.
This is more than a factory dispute. It is a fight over jobs, livelihoods, food security and the future of an entire community.
Watch the full report and hear directly from those demanding that the jobs be saved.
