This morning, South Africa cheers on over 20,000 brave runners taking on the 98th edition of the Comrades Marathon — a nearly 90-kilometre ultramarathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

Whether you’re running to win, to finish, or simply to honour your own journey, we salute your grit, courage, and heart.
The Comrades Marathon is more than a race; it’s a national tradition rooted in resilience, unity, and community. This year’s “down run” is one of the largest ever, attracting athletes from more than 80 countries — proof that this uniquely South African event continues to inspire the world.
Among today’s starters is 83-year-old Johannes Maros Mosehla, aiming to break his own record as the oldest finisher. His quiet strength has already captured the imagination of many, reminding us that limits are often meant to be broken.
The route is lined with supporters from towns, schools, and families — handing out water, cheering until they’re hoarse, and keeping the spirit alive for every stride. It’s a powerful reminder: you may run alone, but you never run unsupported.
To every runner hitting the road today — elite, amateur, first-timer, or Comrades veteran — we wish you strength, endurance, and the joy of finishing what you started.
Good luck, Comrades. South Africa runs with you.
