South Africa has crossed a line it can never uncross. A protected witness, known publicly only as Witness D , was assassinated in front of his own family just days before he was meant to testify about corruption at the highest levels of power.
The state promised him protection. Instead, they offered him a death sentence. If the government cannot keep a single key witness safe for one weekend, then no South African should believe for a second that this country still operates like a democracy. This is what a failing state looks like, where truth is deadly, and those who carry it are hunted.
This is no longer politics. This is organised crime with a flag. When whistleblowers are executed before they speak, corruption becomes immortal. Cartels inside government remain untouchable. And ordinary citizens receive the message loud and clear: If you expose the truth, you die for it. The law does not protect you. The police do not protect you. The state protects only those who benefit from silence. Every assassination of a witness is a warning — a bullet written in bold letters: Do not talk. Do not testify. Do not question.
Justice cannot exist in a country where witnesses are buried before they take the stand. Accountability collapses when truth-tellers are murdered and government officials respond with empty statements, meaningless promises, and “ongoing investigations” that go nowhere. Witness D will not receive justice. And unless South Africans wake up, the next witness will meet the same fate.
