Paul Mashatile has barely been seen in public since July, and the questions surrounding his absence are getting harder to ignore.
Rumours have spread about his health, hospitalisation, poisoning and even possible treatment in Russia. The Deputy Presidency has rejected those claims, saying Mashatile became unwell at home, underwent a minor surgical procedure and is recovering while continuing official work remotely.
So why did the government respond so strongly to one newspaper report?
In this episode, Matthew Cohen examines the claims surrounding Mashatile, the official response, and what his absence says about the ANC as it heads toward the upcoming local government elections.
We also look at Fikile Mbalula’s attempts to defend the ANC’s record, the party’s controversial decision to shortlist 42 mayoral candidates across eight metros, and the growing signs of organisational disarray inside the governing party.
The bigger question is whether the turmoil surrounding Mashatile reflects a wider crisis inside the ANC.
